» I was at the show in Strasbourg Saturday and it was a real pleasure to see them once again live . (ok ok i'm an old follower & maybe i'm deliberetely positive with AATT but anyway here's my impression of the gig...)
The setlist (see above) was quiet perfect & very well measured out, it seems it needed adjustments after the Creil gig : "domed" is a fantastic song & is made to be an opener with its progressive, evolutive side : it resumed well what the trees are proposing nowadays during their shows.
The concert hall was very well packed for the trees at 20H15 & the public was very attentive & regardful which was not obvious for the evening was a kind of indoor rock festival with 3 other very rock bands (& eventually very good that's not the point)playing in the 2 venus of la laiterie.
AATT played in the largest one before Killing Joke . & the least we can say is that HntH is not an album conceived for rock festivals ...
Simon indeed thanks the audience for its attention & the warm & enthousiast response as the band played quiet a lot of new songs (7 from the new cd).
I think AATT presented something varied, complex & with mixed emotions & moods. It seems the band managed to captivate the crowd with soft sometimes intimate but intense songs (& also with great classics of course)
For me HntH is maybe one of the most "difficult" (fastidious) album of the Trees but it's also beautiful & courageous.
I'm not sure i prefer it to "rag & bone man" but i come to like it more & more. There 's such a level of musicality in this record & in the band performance that i would say that AATT is reaching a kind of climax in the present days.
For me they are in their best period since the late eighties. The 2OOO era is just brilliant from "further from the truth" until now including the acoustic adventure which is a great accomplishment.
I was very impressed by all the members (the guitars ahhh) but if you see the band live have a look on Paul Hill behind his drums : what he's doing during for instance "Mucklow" "hunter not the h" or "rive droite" is simply amazing.
For me most of the brand new songs sound already great in live (maybe apart of "rip ridge" which was a bit failed).
There's a lot of delicacy, subtlety and intensity in these tracks.
For the anecdote on "woman on the estuary" Justin plays with what seems to be a Gretsch guitar model (instead of the acoustic in the studio version)
"Only" in live is more punchy than the studio version.
And to finish , i bought my copy of the double 10" vynil album : great object & it contains a free download code & an extra track.

» Well, Copenhagen was a rather small venue. Given the fact that the guys traveled about ~900 km in one day and were on the road for what I assume must've been 11+ hours, they seemed to be pretty relaxed. The venue was kind of small and quite packed (I'm always bad when it comes to estimations - but I'd guess that 200 people showed?). They started to play at midnight. There were a few a sound issues with some quite loud static but that didn't bother them.

The audience was kind of "weird" - it was my first concert in Denmark so maybe that's how it usually is. But when people talk and chat away while the band is playing, that is something that I can never get used to. It also bothers me a lot in Germany. But this was on another level. Even in the front row, directly in front of Simon ... chatting away ...
I prefer a policy like in the Luminaire in London: "when the band is playing: shut the f$%& up".

Anyway, I refer to Achim for the setlist - I can only say that they concluded the gig with Virus Meadow.

So let's see what they have in store for us tonight ;)
Apparently it might be rather cozy as not too many tickets have been sold.

    » Hi,
I can’t remember the exact set-list in Brussels, but they opened with Domed (always a great moment), and then Beautiful Silence and Shaletown; finihed with Vincent Craine (splendid!) / Whisky Bride / Lucy.
The encores were (for sure) :
1/ Prince Rupert / Angel, Devil, Man and Beast / The Untangled Man
    2/ Virus Meadow
If anyone has the complete set-list, welcome!
Great concert anyway, the venue was ok: right size, well crowded but not too much, good sound…; the audience was generally concentrated during the songs and enthusiastic between … Fantastic versions of Dialogue and Rive Droite – this song becomes a powerful ‘classique’ in the aatt’s repertoire.
A very, very great evening with a very, very beautiful band… just brilliant! Three days later and still into it.

the setlist in bxl was pretty similar. despite some ppl complaining about the sound in Koln i thought it was great. bxl was too bassy in my opinion not speaking of some mistakes of Justin during shaletown or craine.
whisky bride was played in koln but skipped in koln otherweise overall same show...
still wondering why slow pulse boy is supposed to be played and always ignored by the band ?

    Blogger MathSou said...
» Maybe they are tired to play Slow Pulse Boy ? It could be like So This Is Silence. They used to play this song at the begining, and it was always a great moment for the crowd. Then, one day, they stopped playing it, despite the audience demands. Slow Pulse Boy is very popular, but the band play what suits to its own mood. Gotta ask Simon and Justin, no ?

» They still play SPB. They did it in Strasbourg (personally I would have preferred Virus Meadows). They play Slow Pulse boy over 20 years on most every single show. They have so much classics ... I think it's good meanwhile do rotate and change the classics between shows... :)

» The Hamburg gig was just plain magnificent - way better than the one in Copenhagen (sorry guys). And a great setlist with both "Virus Meadow" and "Slow Pulse Boy". And both just "in the middle" of the set. Someone else needs to supply a proper setlist. I can only tell you that they closed with "The Untangled Man".

    » Copenhagen:

It is a sad fact that the venue - called Krudttonden - can distroy even the best bands in the world. The stage is almost at floor level. So even people in 2nd or 3rd row can not see a thing!
Furthermore the stage is extremely small which means that the band is cramped on stage. Ian actually had to place one of his basses on top of his amp to find some space for himself!
The room has some odd dimensions which results in many people having to stand at the far sides of the stage. The sound in the room is also quite bad.
Still, AATT played a good show! The new songs sound a lot more tight now than at the first couple of shows and all 5 gents and lady seemed sharp and in good shape.
The setlist was almost identical with the previous ones. No Whiskey Bride though.
I have seen many AATT shows over the years and one thing is certain: They NEVER disappoint! However, given that horrible venue (NOT the band) the Copenhagen show will not enter my top 10.

    » Hamburg:

I don`t think AATT has ever played anything other than brilliant concerts in Hamburg. Eventhough the band suffered from technical problems at the previous concert they played there, they still did an excellent job. This luckily had no problems at all. Everything just worked from the first moment! The set list had several changes compared to Copenhagen. HNTH came in as the second song and both Beatiful Silence and Mucklow was absent from the set list. Instead they had dusted off Scarlet Arch which sound pretty good despite not being played for a while. Slow Pulse made a return to the list and was placed in the middle of the set. It was good to hear Only and it turned out to be one of the best songs that night.
The Untangled Man finished off a fantastic concert. It has absolutly found its way into the top 10 - even the top 3...
    22 May, 2012 20:31
    Blogger bekru said...
» Hej Lars - thanks for summing it up quite beautifully. There is only one minor thing that I have to disagree with: they did play a not-so-great gig in Hamburg. It must've been the mid 90s and they played the Logo. To say it was horrible might be a bit harsh but it was definitely not great.

But I'm on the same page with you that the gig in Hamburg is also probably in my Top 3 AATT gigs!

Kon: Good feelings , not only on stage.... people were glad with old songs and well received new ones. Copenhagen : yes, stage was too small, and the band was tired... but there is no bad concert of AATT... They can find energy when there is some problems... and once again, they did! Set-list? I can remind... except that all the 3 were good!!!

» Went from Berlin to Copenhagen to see my alltime favourite band. The venue was indeed crap. A few days later in Berlin at the Lido: what a difference. Great audienxe, great acoustics. Wonderful concert. Hope to see AATT come here every year.
